			<title>How to make a PPI Claim (Payment Protection Insurance)</title>

			<description>
				How to make a PPI Claim (Payment Protection Insurance)

Watch this HowTo.tv video to see if you're eligible for money back

Have you taken out a loan or credit card from a bank or building society?

Are you one of the 2 million people who have been sold insurance they don't need and can't use?

You may have been recommended to take out something called Payment Protection Insurance (PPI). It helps borrowers to meet the repayments of a loan if they are unable to keep up repayments due to accident, sickness or unemployment.
This works in theory, but in practice many people have had their claims turned down due to policy clauses and exclusions. The Office of Fair Trading estimates that there are around 20 million policies currently in force, with as many as 7.5 million further policies being sold every year. The profit the industry makes each year from the sale of PPI policies is estimated to be &#163;5 billion.

The Financial Services Authority (FSA) have fined a number of High Street Banks and Building Societies for Mis-selling PPI which means you may now claim back the payments you have made.

In the following video, an expert from Belmont Thornton explains who is eligible to apply for money back.

			<title>Global Slowdown : The Perfect Storm for the rise of Super SMEs?</title>

			<description>
				In an impassioned cry for support from the engine room of British business, three out of ten SMEs fear they will not be here in 12 months time. Yet the same study of more than 1,000 businesses across the UK reveals a new tribe of 'Super SMEs' who are booming through increasingly tough market conditions.

Crucially, the report investigates what Super SMEs and struggling businesses did differently as the slowdown first loomed on the horizon. In doing so the report which delivers an action plan for business survival. ( Downloadable here: http://www.be-a-super-sme.com/advice) The plan is comprised of a ten-point checklist for anyone running their own business and includes tips on where to concentrate investment and what to prioritise when the chips are down, using the Super SMEs as the template for success.

David Molian of Cranfield School of Management and leading business luminaries contribute to the report commissioned by workplace telecoms specialist Plantronics, alongside Super SME case studies revealing their own strategies for success in a downturn.

&quot;The overall picture from the study is even more serious than I would have predicted&quot;, Molian comments, adding that &quot;the small number of super-performers will be the engine of growth for our economy and they share a common management philosophy: they invest in their staff&quot;.

While six out of ten SMEs brace themselves for negative growth in the next year, attitudes towards business critical issues such as diversification, flexible working, IT infrastructure and marketing cannot be ignored. Indeed, 62% of all SMEs have never had to face a slowdown before and are looking with increasing urgency for actionable advice and insight on challenging business decisions.

The study has been translated into a compelling blueprint for survival 'The Rise of The Super SME : A Guide to Plain Sailing through the Recession' which is available for download alongside a video featuring David Molian helping to navigate your way through the key outcomes and tips for business success.

So, what does it take to become a super SME? As well as hearing from leading experts we go behind the scenes at one to reveal some canny tips for survival.

			<title>British Business determined to Weather the Storm </title>

			<description>
				Despite the tales of economic woe, a benchmark survey of leading British finance directors shows the majority of firms are weathering the storm and determined to come out the other side. Although there is much talk of redundancies, only a fifth of firms sampled by the Chartered Institute of Management Accountants (CIMA) have reduced their workforce in the past year. Three quarters also predict headcount will stay the same or even grow in the next 12 months. The majority appears to be investing their way out of a recession with between 70 - 80% of firms planning to maintain or increase spending on marketing, staff training and capital expenditure.

This is certainly reassuring if you have been worried about what the future holds for you because of the economic situation. Many of us are fearing that we will either have to cut back on staff, lose our jobs or that we have no hope of having a career in the future, however despite the high profile redundancies taking place, we are actually more secure then we are lead to believe.

Here to offer advice on coping with economic downturn is Director of CIMA, Ray Perry. Whether you are an employer, an employee or a student who is unsure of his or hers future, then watch Ray's tips on how you can beat the recession and look forward to a brighter future.

				<media:text>Despite the tales of economic woe, a benchmark survey of leading British finance directors shows the majority of firms are weathering the storm and determined to come out the other side.

			<title>Pensions Law Change</title>

			<description>
				On the 1st October of this year, the government will give those who have contracted out of the state second pension greater control over planning for their retirement.

What does this mean? Over the years many of us with pensions have opted out of S2P - or SERPS as it used to be known. This is the second part of the state pension into which our National Insurance contributions are made. The technical name for this is Protected Rights and until now where this money could be invested has been governed by strict rules.

Now that the government has changed the rules, individuals have a much greater choice of where to invest their money. Vehicles now permitted include commercial property, Unit Trusts, Investment debentures and warrants - many of which have performed significantly better than the managed pension funds currently invested in.

So what should you do on the 1st October? According to the results of a survey released by independent investment strategists Killik &amp; Co, half of people with a pension never check its performance with even more having no idea of what they have in their fund. 78% of us have no kind of pension strategy yet this major change in the law could impact on how much money we have in retirement.

Here to explain how the law will affect you and offer advice on where to invest your money, is pensions expert Hannah Edwards

			<title>Smarter ways of working</title>

			<description>
				It's a fact. Flexible working is all the rage, and for good reason. Chaining employees to their desks and ruling their working lives with an iron fist is a practice that's dead and buried.

Having said that bosses shouldn't feel pressured to give away perks that lower productivity. Flexible working doesn't mean letting your team turn up when they want, surf the internet all day or take long luxurious lunches. A &quot;well run&quot; organisation makes its staff want to come to work in the mornings, work hard during the day, and feel rewarded when they leave at night. The trick is to boost morale by helping your team to work smarter, and it doesn't take drastic changes to make a big difference. Perks should be constructive and mutually beneficial. A few subtle upgrades or tweaks here and there will enhance productivity and staff drive no end.

The trick is to boost morale by helping your team to work smarter, and it doesn't take drastic changes to make a big difference. Perks should be constructive and mutually beneficial. A few subtle upgrades or tweaks here and there will enhance productivity and staff drive no end.</media:text>

				In the post-feminist world such dreams should not be out of reach, and yet in the science, engineering and technology (SET) industries women still make up only a pitiful 18% of the workforce. If you are looking for a new challenge and want a decent wage into the bargain, then why not consider SET as an option? Or consider a women for your next position.

Elspeth will be telling us about the course she ran for women returning to work after having a family proving that whatever your situation, it&#146;s never too late to change your career and the rest of your life.

			<title>Get clever with your cash</title>

			<description>
				With research showing that over half of us only check their bank balance once a week and a shocking 1 in 5 only check their balance once a month, it's clear we're in need of some financial guidance. Most of us have no idea of our financial status when we make a purchase and this lack of control has resulted in over a third of the UK population going accidentally overdrawn. The research conducted by Monilink also found that over a quarter of Brits have had sleepless nights over their finances, if you are one of these poor souls, don't worry. Help is at hand!

Click here to watch Lawrence Gold from TV's &quot;The Bank of Mum and Dad&quot; share his top tips on bettering your finances. He offers simple and easy to follow tips such as separating your essentials from your non- essentials, and making sure that you check your balance at least once a week.

			<title>EDDIE STOBART COMING TO THE STOCK MARKET</title>

			<description>
				The Westbury Property Fund Limited (&#145;Westbury&#146;), the commercial property and ports company, announces a proposed merger1 with Eddie Stobart Group (&#145;Eddie Stobart&#146;), one of the most recognised brands2 in the UK. The new, enlarged company, to be known as Stobart Group Limited, will have net assets of over &#163;250m.

The merger brings together two companies which see huge commercial and environmental benefits of combining road transport and storage with rail freight and waterborne transport systems, thereby offering customers a truly integrated transport and logistics solution.

Westbury brings a port development site in Runcorn, a rail freight operating business and a rail terminal in Widnes. Westbury has a strong balance sheet, an experienced Board and an established following from some leading City investors.

Eddie Stobart has a modern, well-invested fleet of more than 1,500 trailers and 900 trucks (tractor units), each christened with its own, unique female name. The business also has circa 2.6 million square feet of storage space across a network of over 27 operating sites (including 10 customer sites) across the UK and one site in Belgium as well as its own rail operations.

Since 2004, Eddie Stobart has been run by the founder&#146;s son, William Stobart and his school-friend and business-partner, Andrew Tinkler. Eddie Stobart will continue with the same strong management group, with Andrew Tinkler becoming Chief Executive Officer and William Stobart becoming Chief Operating Officer.

The combined group will have an established portfolio of long-term, big-brand customers, including Tesco, Coca-Cola, Johnson &amp; Johnson and Sarah Lee, employing more than 2,000 people across the UK - principally in Carlisle, Daventry, Runcorn, Widnes and Warrington. At Widnes, in the North West, the combined group plans to develop over one million square feet of additional warehousing space which could create in excess of 1,000 new jobs.

			<title>Join the fight for pensions justice</title>

			<description>
				Thousands of people are facing the possibility of having their retirement plans and futures turned upside down as the row over the collapse of a number of company pensions intensifies. The Government assured people that company pension schemes were safe and around 125,000 workers are demanding compensation. Throwing its weight behind the campaign, Saga is announcing its support for those who, having saved diligently for their retirement are now suffering. It is campaigning for the Government to compensate members of failed pension schemes, and is urging its two million customers to lobby their Member of Parliament to call for justice to be done. I spoke to Ros Altmann from the Pensions Action Group. I asked her, just how many people are affected?
